With more than a decade of experience, Deborah J. Callender currently serves as the physical scientist for the Naval Oceanographic Office. Skilled in management, leadership, research and analysis, she manages such studies as the marine seafloor geology profile and fleet projects for the U.S. Navy. Additionally, her skills as a GIS project manager are used when acquiring data and integrating seafloor geology, physical oceanography, meteorology, bathymetry, ice, shipping and fisheries into navigation and safety specifications for clients.
In addition to her role with the Naval Oceanographic Office, Ms. Callender is the project manager for the Global Marine Environmental Library, which integrates academia and published documents into databases interconnected to GIS data. Her work is not done yet, as she is an AUV Survey GIS analyst of the Remote Environmental Measuring Unites (REMUS), which analyzes side-scan sonar. She also provides her expertise for the ISS-60 Watchstander for oceanographic surveys, which include processing of multi-beam bathymetry. To prepare for her career, Ms. Callender earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Utah, where she participated with the U.S. Navy ROTC. She went on to earn a Master of Arts in management from the University of Redlands. In 2004, Ms. Callender earned a Master of Science in computer science (3D visualization/animation), geology, and GIS certification at the University of Southern Mississippi.
Named one of the Top Female Executives, Professionals & Entrepreneurs by Worldwide Branding, Ms. Callender is a member of The International Women’s Leadership Association and a Distinguished Delegate honored for continued contribution to the field of scientific project management. She remains updated in her field through her affiliation with the American Association of Geographers, the American Geophysical Union and the American Meteorological Society. Looking toward the future, Ms. Callender endeavors to develop a multimillion-dollar specialized contract for her division and returning to education to learn more about marine biology.
